Heart Words

I’m always referring to hearts in my allegorical stories, so I enjoy collecting those kinds of words.  Here’s a list of some interesting words related to the heart (many of which came from the English Dialect Dictionary).

Cazzon-hearted – out of heart, dispirited, sick on the subject

Duck-hearted – cowardly

Cordiform – heart-shaped

Cordolium – heartache, sorrow of heart

Hale-hearted – of unbroken spirit

Heart-bun – strongly attached to a place; having a great desire to accomplish something

Heart-ease – to ease the mind

Heart-gone – gone or diseased at the heart or core; fallen in love

Heart-grace – goodness of disposition

Heart’s gree – delight

Heart-grief – severe grief

Heart-grown – strongly attached to a person or thing; set upon anything

Heart-heezer – a comfort, that which cheers the heart

Heart-heezing – heart-cheering

Heart-hod – affection, hold upon the feelings

Heart-hungered- starved

Heart-kittling – affecting

Heart-quake – trembling of the heart

Heart-rovven – having the feelings lacerated

Heart-scald – heartburn; great grief, disappointment, trouble

Heart-scalded – troubled, tormented, afflicted

Heart-slain – exhausted by over-exertion; heartbroken

Heart-spoon – the pit of the stomach

Heart-stangs – mental excruciations

Heart-sunk – desponding, depressed

Heart-thirled – bound by the affections

Heart-warm – of a kindly disposition; affectionate

Heart-well – in good general health and spirits

Heart-hale – in good health and spirits

Heart-work – sincerity, the work of the heart morally

Hearten – to cheer, comfort, encourage, strength

Heartful – in high spirits, cheery; sorrowful, sad-hearted

Heartsome – merry, cheerful, lively; pleasant, attractive

Heartsomeness – cheerfulness

Hen-hearted – cowardly

Kecken-hearted – squeamish; loathing the sight of food; faint-hearted

Leal-hearted – true-hearted, faithful

Milk-hearted – poor-spirited

Moke-hearted – timid, cowardly

Out-of-heart – down-hearted, dispirited

Sore-hearted – sad at heart

Verticordious – that which turns the heart from evil

Wasteheart – woe
